The transit time of a document 25 between positions A and B is varied by providing a first variable portion of the transport path over which the document is conveyed at velocity V 1 , and a second fixed portion of the path over which the document is conveyed at velocity V 2 . The document is decelerated from velocity V 2 to velocity V 0 at which latter velocity it arrives at B. The portion of the path at velocity V 1 is provided by co-operating rollers 1 and 2 and the portion at V 2 by rollers 10 (V 2 being greater than V 1 ). The rollers 10 may be peripherally adjusted about roller 1 to vary the position at which the documents are brought to velocity V 2 and thus vary the length of path over which they travel at velocity V 1 . Rollers 10 may run against a freely rotatable insert (5, Fig. 1, not shown) in roller 1. The device may be used to regulate the spacing of sheets being forwarded to a stacker for which purpose the position of rollers 10 is controlled by a sheet detector 31. |
