PURPOSE:To decrease the load on the bearings of a heating roll by bringing a pressing member into surface contact with the heating roll and selecting the materials for the surfaces of the heating roll and the pressing member in such a manner that the coefft. of friction between the pressing member and paper is made lower than the coefft. of friction between the heating roll and the paper. CONSTITUTION:The material for the surface of the heating roll 10 and the material for the surface of the pressing member 20 are so selected that the coefft. of friction between the pressing member 20 and the paper is made lower than the coefft. of friction between the heating roll 10 and the paper. The pressing member 20 is constituted by sticking a heat resistant film 24 consisting of a PTFE, PFA, FEP, etc., onto the surface of an elastic material 22 consisting of felt, etc., and is adjusted by the sheet 4 so as to have the lwoer coefft. of friction on the surface. The pressing member 20 is fixed by screws 28 to a pressing member support 26. The support 26 is preferably made of a metal such as aluminum and extends together with the pressing member 20 to the entire length of the heating roll 20 in the axial direction thereof. The compact fixing device having good conveyance characteristics to obviate the clogging of the paper in the fixing device is thus obtd.
