PURPOSE:To read both characters and photographs mixed in one original with fidelity by designating the area of an original and binarizing a picture in the designated area and a picture at the outside of the area by a binarizing means or applying the gradation by a gradation means. CONSTITUTION:An area designation control circuit 26 applies switching control to a switch circuit 15 depending on a line synchronizing signal (LSYNC), a clock (CLK) supplied from a master timing circuit 20 and an area data supplied from a CPU 19. Further, the CPU 19 applies switching control of switch circuits 13, 14 in response to the mode designated by a console panel 27. Further, a density designation signal in response to the density designated by the console panel 27 is outputted to a simple binarizing circuit 11 and a dither binarizing circuit 12, where the density signal is outputted to a serial/parallel conversion circuit 16.
