In a liquid level gauge such as for measuring the liquid level in the holds of ships, a float 1, guided by wires 2 and attached by a perforated tape 3 passing over a sprocket 8 and wound on a drum 9, on release of a locking device 5, drops the float 1 on to the level of the liquid and the rate of descent is limited by shearing a film of hydraulic fluid, contained in a drum 9, between the surface of a fixed disc 15 located within the drum 9 and closely spaced from a side wall of the drum 9. The tape 3 is wound up by a 2:1 speed reduction crank, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), attached to a boss 27. Two spring strips wound on a central hub 13 and storage drums 14, carried by the disc 15, within the drum 9 hold the tape 3, under constant tension. The sprocket 8 drives a digital indicator, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown).</p> |
