Non-conjugated diolefins are prepared by copolymerizing a mono-olefinic hydrocarbon with a diolefin at 50-300‹ C. and 5-250 atmospheres in the presence of a catalyst comprising an alkali metal amide composited on a substantially anhydrous solid support which has a surface area of at least 25 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. and which has been promoted with a compound selected from salts and hydroxides of the alkali metals and alkaline earth metals and thereafter calcined. The preferred support is alumina. Examples describe the reactions of ethylene and 1,3-butadiene to give C 8 non-conjugated dienes; propylene and 1,3-butadiene to give 1,5- and 2,5.heptadienes; propylene and 1,4- pentadiene to give 4-methylheptadienes; propylene and 1,3-cyclopentadiene to give alkylcyclopentenes; and 1-butane and 1,3-butadiene to give 3-methylheptadienes. |
