PURPOSE:To obtain a dimethylaminomethyl copper phthalocyanine and derivatives thereof with extremely low yields of by-products, monomethylaminomethyl copper phthalocyanine and derivatives thereof, by reacting an aminomethyl copper phthalocyanine and/or a derivative thereof with formic acid and a formaldehyde-generating material. CONSTITUTION:An aminomethyl copper phthalocyanine of formula I (wherein CuPc is a residue of copper phthalocyanine; X is H, halogen, -SO3H group, -CH2OH group; m, n are independently an integer of 1-4) and/or a derivative thereof are/is reacted with formic acid and a formaldehyde-generating material at 100-200 deg.C under pressure to obtain a dimethylaminomethyl copper phthalocyanine of formula II (wherein CuPc, X, m, n are the same as those defined in the formula I) and a derivative thereof. It is preferred that the reaction temp. is 110-150 deg.C and the formaldehyde-generating material is formaldehyde, formalin or paraformaldehyde.
