PURPOSE:To obtain a novel polymer excellent in heat resistance, mechanical strength, flame retardancy and solvent resistance, by treating a reaction product of a dihalogenobenzonitrile with an alkali metal salt of a 4,4'- dihydroxybenzophenone with water or an alcohol. CONSTITUTION:A dihalogenobenzonitrile of formula I (wherein X is a halogen), an alkali metal salt of a 4,4'-dihydroxydibenzophenone of formula II (wherein M is an alkali metal) in an amount approximately equimolar to that of the above compound and, optionally, a MW modifier comprising a monophenol of formula III (wherein R is H, a 1-10C alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or cyano) are dissolved in an aprotic polar solvent such as sulfolane and reacted together at 150-350 deg.C for 0.5-5hr in an atmosphere of N2 or Ar. The reaction product is treated with water or an alcohol to obtain a novel polymer essentially of a skeleton comprising a plurality of linearly bonded repeating units of formula IV, end-blocked with H or groups of formulas V-VIII and having a reduced viscosity >=0.3dl/g (in 0.2g/l concentration p-chlorophenol at 60 deg.C).
