Magnetic transducer-keeper (28) combination embodiments of the invention. Each has a magnetic core (20) defining a physical gap (26) and a thin magnetic keeper (28) arranged in close proximity of the core (20) to bridge the gap (26). A magnetic flux (48) from the gap (26) saturates the keeper (28) in an area bridging the gap (26) thereby forming a signal transducing zone (50) in the keeper (28). The keeper (28) is maintained stationary and the core (20) moved or scanned with respect to the same, thereby moving or scanning the transducing zone (50) in the keeper (28).
