PURPOSE:To detect a failure of a compressor at an early stage, stop the operation of the compressor, and reduce its damage due to the failure by releasing a solenoid clutch when the number of pulsations of the operating medium discharged from the compressor become lower than the number of rotations of a rotary driving source by a predetermined value. CONSTITUTION:If an foreign object infiltrates into an operating chamber 15 and is bitten between one of five vanes 13 and a slit 12 through which the vanes 13 enter and leave during the operation of a compressor 1, for example, only four pulsations of the compressed refrigerant discharged from a discharge valve 17 for the transit of each vane 13 are generated, while five pulsations are normally generated fro each rotation of a rotor 7. Therefore, these pulsations are detected by a pulsation sensor 21 and fed to a comparator 19, which generates an output when detecting that the number of pulsations are a preset value or less. Thereby, this output is fed to a relay 27 to open a switch 28, and the energizing circuit of the solenoid clutch 6 of the compressor 1 is cut off to release the solenoid clutch 6. Accordingly, the operation of the compressor is stopped and its damage due to a failure can be reduced.
