In a self-steering trailer or semi-trailer bogie including a front axle 2 rigidly connected to a pair of leaf springs 4, a rear axle 3 displaceably connected to the springs 4, a ball-bearing turntable 9 for supporting the trailer frame, and a steering arm 21 rigidly attached to the rear axle 3 and connected to an actuating element 14 for turning the axle 3 in response to turning of the bogie, the actuating element 14 comprises an upper lever arm 15 for connection to the trailer frame, a lower rearwardly-directed lever arm 16 pivotally connected to the steering arm 21, and a vertical shaft 18 connecting the two lever arms and mounted in a tubular member 17 supported from the lower ring 11 of the turntable. The front axle 2 is rigidly attached to the springs 4 by clamps 5 and the rear axle 3 is attached to the springs by saddles 6 in which the spring ends slide. The springs 4 are pivotally connected about a transverse axis disposed below the springs to a transverse bearer 8 secured in clamps 13 carried by inverted U- shaped brackets 12 depending from the lower turntable ring 11. The steering arm 21 is connected by a ball joint 22 to the lever arm 16 and has forked rear ends which straddle the axle 3. As shown the shaft 17 is aligned with the turntable axis and the upper lever arm 15 is connected directly to the trailer frame by an adjustable link 19, but in another embodiment, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), the vertical shaft is positioned forwardly or rearwardly of the turntable axis and an adjustable link connects the upper lever arm to the upper ring of the turntable. A centring device comprising a notch member 23 and a nose member 24 loaded by a fluid pressure cylinder 25 resists departure from the straight-ahead position, and a locking means 26, 28 actuated by a fluid pressure cylinder 27 prevents turning of the bogie when reversing.</p> |
