PURPOSE:To easily superpose a character, etc., on an image by providing a contour extracting means. CONSTITUTION:A rewriting control device 5 is constituted of a microprocessor, and has a function for rewriting the contents of a video RAM 6 and a function for converting a character code to a character dot pattern. A contour data is extracted by the rewriting control device 5. A character data from a keyboard 8 is stored in a document memory 2 through an I/O interface 11 and a bus, and a printer 9 is a dot printer of an impact type, and outputs a dot pattern data which is sent through an image bus and the I/O interface 11. Even when extracting a contour, (a)-(e) denote one dot in an image data, and a' denotes one dot in the contour data of a position corresponding to a point (a) in the image data. As for a transfer, when (a)-(e) are all '1', a' becomes '0', and in case of other time, (a) is transferred to a' as it is.
