PURPOSE:To increase capacity recovery ratio after a long term storage, by surface-treating the surface of glass fiber constituting a mat with water-repellant material. CONSTITUTION:The target of this invention is a glass mat for a closed type lead storage battery in which glass fibers before combing or a glass mat after being subjected to paper making process is surface-treated with water-repellent agent made of a compound belonging to fluorine series or silicon series to reduce the wettability against electrolyte to the same level with that of a negative electrode plate or less, and sufficient ability to supply the electrolyte held by the glass mat to the negative electrode plate is given to the glass mat. Since the glass mat has wettability against the electrolyte equal to that of the negative electrode plate or less, even if the amount of the electrolyte is decreased it has sufficient ability to supply the electrolyte to the negative electrode plate. Therefore, even after storage, variations in the filling rate of the electrolyte is small, so that storage characteristic degradation due to domination of the negative electrode is suppressed. |
