PURPOSE:To advantageously obtain the titled compound from acetone or an acidic condensate thereof and 2,2,4,4-6-pentamethyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydropyrimidine in high yield and purity, by using a specific catalyst, e.g. a halogenated phenol, etc. CONSTITUTION:Acetone or an acidic condensate thereof is reacted with 2,2,4,4,6- pentamethyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydropyrimidine to produce the titled compound useful as an intermediate for light stabilizers in high polymric materials or medicines, etc. In the process, one or more compounds selected from halogenated phenols, halogenated pyrimidines, benzotriazole and L-ascorbic acid are used as a catalyst, as necessary, together with a Lewis acid or protonic acid, etc., to afford the aimed compound in higher yield and purity using the catalyst in a smaller amount (1/10molar ratio) and shorter reaction time than half in those of a well-known method. This method permits the reaction to proceed even at a low temperature.
