PURPOSE:To obtain an amine oxide in high safety and yield, by adding water to a tertiary amine and reacting the amine with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a catalyst at a specific temperature. CONSTITUTION:A tertiary amine is added with >=2wt% water and is made to react with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a catalyst such as a mixture of a carbonate or bicarbonate and a polyphosphoric acid salt at a temperature above the azeotropic temperature of said amine and water (e.g. 76-85 deg.C in the case of triethylamine) under active vaporizing and refluxing condition. The tertiary amine is sued preferably in somewhat excess to hydrogen peroxide.
