PURPOSE:To easily and selectively remove basic nitrogen compound such as aromatic amino compound from a tar acid, by adding an aliphatic polycarboxylic acid (or its anhydride or salt) to a tar acid and distilling the mixture. CONSTITUTION:(A) A tar acid obtained from coal carbonization of coal gasification process is added with (B) an aliphatic polycarboxylic acid (e.g. succinic acid, citraconic acid, glutaric acid, etc.) capable of forming an acid anhydride by intramolecular dehydration reaction or its acid anhydride or salt and the obtained mixture is distilled to afford purified tar acid. The amount of the component B is about 2-4 equivalent per 1 equivalent of aromatic amino compound (e.g. aniline, toluidine, etc.) in the component A.
