Novel epoxy resins of formula <FORM:1083594/C3/1> where x is an integer from 0 to 10 and at least one of the p-phenylene radicals is substituted with a methylol group, no other substituents being present, are prepared by reacting the corresponding phenol with epichlorohydrin or a -dichlorohydrin in a mole ratio of at least 1:1.1 in the presence of alkaline material. The resins may be polymerized alone or with other polyepoxides. Lists of conventional curing agents are given. Other ingredients include monoglycidyl ethers, drying oils, cellulose derivatives, vinyl polymers, coal tars, pine oils, bituminous materials and fillers.ALSO:The invention comprises polyglycidyl ethers of formula <FORM:1083594/C2/1> where x is an integer from 0 to 10 and at least one of the p-phenylene radicals is substituted with a methylol group, no other substituents being present. They may be prepared by reacting the corresponding phenol with epichlorohydrin or a -dichlorohydrin in a mole ratio of at least 1:1.1 in the presence of an alkaline material. The higher molcular weight compounds may also be obtained by reacting a diglycidyl ether of methylol-substituted 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane with a less than equivalent amount of 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propane. |
