A p-substituted halobenzene derivative, which is very valuable in industry, can be obtained by halogenation of benzene and/or a benzene derivative in a liquid phase at the temperature of 0 to 200°C at a higher selectivity and yield than in known process, using, as a catalyst, an L type zeolite alkali-treated with an alkali solution of pH ll or above at the temperature of 0 to l00°C for 0.5 to l00 hours.
