Acetone(I) is prepd. by oxidizing propylene(II) with O2 in the presence of a composite catalyst comprising an O2-complexing metal complex of formula, MmXnLp(IIIa) and a (II)-complexing metal complex of formula, M'xXyL'z(III6)[M=a transition metal of Gp. I or [V-VII or an Fe-gp. Metal; x=anion; L=organophosphor cpd.; M'=a Pt-gp. Metal; L'=nitrile, org. F cpd. or organophosphorus cpd.; m,n,x,y=a no. detd. by the valences of M and M'V and X; p,z=no. of ligands . Thus, 1 l (II) is passed through a reactor contg. a O2-complex catalyst soln. of [CuCl.hmpa/PdCl2 CH3CN.hmpa/hmpa. MeCN system at 25≦̸C and the soln is heated to 60≦̸C, continued for 60min to give 80% (I) based in O2 in the complex.
