PURPOSE:To easily produce the titled fine fiber in high yield at a low cost, by evaporating a transition metal under reduced pressure, introducing the vapor into a carbon fiber formation zone and producing carbon fiber in a state containing floating fine particles of the transition metal. CONSTITUTION:A transition metal such as Fe or its inorganic compound is evaporated under reduced pressure preferably at a vacuum degree of 20-200Torr. the produced vapor is introduced into the carbon fiber-producing zone. The objective fiber is formed by the thermal decomposition of an organic carbon compound (preferably an aromatic compound) in the presence of fine particles of the transition metal floating in said zone. Concretely, a graphite crucible 11 containing fibrous metal 12 is placed in an evacuated apparatus 10, the metal 12 is heated and evaporated by the arc generated between an electrode 13 and the crucible 11 and the vapor is set together with H2 gas, etc., to a carbon fiber-producing tube 1. The temperature of the fiber-forming zone is preferably 1,000-1,300 deg.C. |
