NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R<1> is lower alkyl; R<2> is lower alkyl or aralkyl; R<3> is H or lower alkyl). EXAMPLE:N,N-dimethyl-3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)serine. USE:A remedy for central nervous diseases. It exhibits suppressive effect against the lowering of body temperature and blepharoptosis caused by recerpine and is useful as a remedy for depression, parkinson's disease, senile dementia, etc. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced by reacting the compound of formula II (R is protective group of aromatic hydroxyl group) with the carbonyl compound of formula III (R and R are H, lower alkyl, etc.) in a solvent such as methanol, treating the reaction product with a reducing agent such as sodium cyanoborohydride and deprotecting the resultant N,N- disubstituted-phenylserine derivative of formula IV.
