A stop watch mechanism having means for stopping and releasing the balance comprises a heart shaped cam 12 fixedly mounted on the balance staff, a first pivotable lever 15 which is biased about its pivot 9 into a position in which it engages the cam to stop the balance, a second pivotable lever 17 which engages the first lever and is biased to move the first lever to a position in which it is disengaged from the cam to release the balance and actuating means for displacing the second lever against its bias to allow the first lever to engage the cam, the angular position of the cam relative to the centre of oscillation of the balance being such that when the balance is released its oscillation will be continued. Lever 17 carries a tooth 21 engageable in castellations 22 in an operating ratchet wheel 20. A setting pin 14 on the balance wheel 13 engages a surface 15b of the first lever, and a projection 24 on this lever engages a stop 23 to avoid undue impact on the balance. |
