PURPOSE:To evaluate the welding quality of a seam welded pipe without any destruction by receiving an acoustic emission (AE) wave generated at a defect in welding owing to heat stress generated when the seam welded pipe is cooled after being welded. CONSTITUTION:The welded steel pipe 7 has its high-temperature seam part cooled gradually in a cooling process after being welded. A nozzle 9 to which a transducer 10 is fitted is installed in the pipe so as to detect the AE wave generated in the cooling process and water is jetted from the nozzle 9 to the pipe. The AE wave generated at the defect at this time is transmitted through the pipe, water, and nozzle in order. Then, the AE wave is received by the transducer 10 to evaluate the welding quality of the seam welded pipe without any destruction.
