PURPOSE:To enable a smear defect to be automatically detected from color image signals by providing means for extracting a plurality of types of color difference signals and providing image memories with storing means, control calculation means and the like. CONSTITUTION:An image pickup element 3 to be tested is mounted to a television camera 2 and a white screen 1 is photographed. Then, color image signals 9 which are the output signals of the camera 2 are inputted to a color difference signal separating circuit 4 and two types of the color difference signals, that is, R-Y signals 10 and 11 are digitized by A/D converters 5a and 5b to be stored in memories 6 and 7, respectively. The contents of the memories 6 and 7 are read by a computer. Further, image processing, such as differentiation, binarization and the like for an image, are conducted by using a computer 8. Thus, a smear can be automatically detected.
