PURPOSE:To correct the position deviation of a head at high speed by stepping slightly the head by the prescribed quantity only to the inside and outside of a present position, storing respectively a reproducing signal level in respective positions, stepping a reproducing head by the prescribed quantity to the position to give the maximum signal level and fixing the head. CONSTITUTION:The signal level VB of an initial position B is stored, a head is shifted for a distance D to an outer circumferential side and a signal level VA in a position A is stored. Further, the head is shifted for a distance 2D to the inner circumferential side, and a signal level VC in a position C is stored. Next, stored VA and VB are compared, when the VA is larger, a head 31 is shifted to the position A and a signal reproducing action is started. When the VA is equal to VB or smaller than VB, the VB and VC are compared. When the VB is larger than the VC, the head 31 is shifted to a position B and the signal reproducing action is started. When the VB is equal to the VC or smaller than the VB, a signal reproducing action is started while the position of the head 31 is at C. The deviation of the head position can be corrected suitably at the high speed.
