PURPOSE:To provide a magnetic recording medium having excellent durability without generating film delamination by forming a surface oxide layer on a nonmagnetic metal or nonmagnetic alloy and forming a magnetic oxide layer thereon. CONSTITUTION:The surface of a substrate 1 for which an aluminum alloy is used is worked to specified accuracy and thereafter a nickel-phosphorus plating layer 2 is formed thereon, by which the nonmagnetic substrate is formed. After the surface of the nickel-phosphorus plating layer 2 is finished to a specular surface, the nonmagnetic metallic layer 3 consisting of chromium or titanium, etc., is formed by a DC magnetron method thereon. The surface oxide layer 4 is formed on the surface of said layer. The magnetic oxide layer 5 consisting of deltaFe2O3 is formed by high-frequency sputtering on the surface oxide layer 4 and a protective film 6 is formed thereon. The magnetic recording medium which has excellent magnetic characteristics and high adhesive power and obviates the generation of the film delamination is thus obtd.
