PURPOSE:To improve both of vertical magnetic anisotropy and coercive force in a vertical direction by forming an underlying film consisting of carbon or carbide on a substrate then forming a thin magnetic Co-Cr film thereon. CONSTITUTION:This vertical magnetic recording medium is constituted by forming the underlying film 2 consisting of the carbon or carbide on the nonmagnetic substrate 1 and forming the thin magnetic film 3 consisting of Co-Cr thereon. Then the vertical magnetic anisotropy of the thin magnetic film 3 is improved and the coercive force in the vertical direction is improved by the influence of the film 2. More specifically, a small amt. of, for example, carbon lowers the m.p. of Cr. A small amt. of carbon, therefore, accelerates the segregation of Cr and disconnects the interaction at the crystal grain boundaries of the Co-Cr film 3 to promote the isolated granular characteristic, thereby improving the magnetic characteristics. The crystallinity of SiC improves the crystallinity of the initially grown layer of the Co-Cr film 3 and the magnetic characteristics are thereby improved in the case of a carbide, for example, SiC.
