PURPOSE:To prevent resolution from being deteriorated and colors from being mixed, by transferring twice electric charges on a vertical signal line transferred from one photoreceptor element to an output signal line at the time of interlaced scanning. CONSTITUTION:By preparing vertical signals 6a and 6b for reading signal and output signal lines 7a and 7b by two pieces each against one line of picture elements in the vertical direction, signal lines to be used when signals are read out are switched at every one horizontal scan. Moreover, by alternately using the two output signal lines 7a and 7b and transmitting signal charges on the vertical signal lines twice to the output signal lines, actual signal readout time can be made twice as long as the conducting time of a horizontal MOS transistor 5a, which is determined by a driving frequency. When interlaced scanning is performed on a solid-state image pickup device, horizontal scanning is performed at a horizontal shift register 3 and the horizontal MOS transistor 5a is alternately opened and closed. As a result, signals of the vertical signal lines 6a are transferred to the output signal line 7a and read out as signals S1. Therefore, signal charges which are left unread to the vertical signal lines are considerably reduced and color mixture and deterioration of vertical resolution can be prevented.
