PURPOSE:To provide an excellent electromagnetic conversion characteristic and light shielding property to a magnetic recording medium formed by providing a magnetic layer on a vapor deposited layer of a nonmagnetic metal provided on a nonmagnetic substrate having a specific value or below of surface roughness by specifying the light transmittivity at 900nm wavelength of said medium. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic recording medium formed by providing the vapor deposited layer of the nonmagnetic metal on one surface of the nonmagnetic substrate having <=0.025mum surface roughness Ra and further providing the magnetic layer on the vapor deposited layer is so formed that the light transmittivity at 900nm wavelength is >=2% with the magnetic layer and is <0.05% as a whole. More specifically, the vapor deposited layer of the nonmagnetic metal has the effect of decreasing the light transmittivity at 900nm wavelength to <0.05% and in this respect, the thickness of the layer, the kind of the metal, etc., are selected. The S/N characteristic of the magnetic layer is exceptionally good at >=2% of the light transmittivity at 900nm wavelength.
