A last article of the group (G) possibly adhering to the foremost article of the oncoming stack (S) is detached by means of a retaining element (4) having a lower abutting surface (43) and a holding surface (42) directed upstream. After the depositing scoop (5) has been pivoted away, the retaining element (4) executes a downward movement at a distance in front of the foremost article of the oncoming stack (S), in order, shortly before it reaches the lowest position, to be moved upstream until it comes to bear on this article. Contact therefore takes place only either when an article remains adhering or when an article would fall from the stack (S). Consequently, pressure is never exerted on the articles. <IMAGE>
