摘要 PURPOSE:To make an operation margin larger by providing a thin ferroelectric film on one or both electrodes and handling the same as part of orientation treatment layers so that the surface is made stabler to a ferroelectric liquid crystal and that the critical electric field is made more distinct. CONSTITUTION:A cell having 4mum or smaller cell space is formed by using substrates which are provided with the thin ferroelectric films, more preferably thin org. ferroelectric films of orientation treatment surfaces 5', 5'' thereon and are further subjected to an asymmetric orientation treatment or treatment such as rubbing. The ferroelectric liquid crystal 5 which exhibits a chiral smectic C phase (SmC*) as a liquid crystal material and is sealed therein at a high temp. The bistable state exhibiting the SmC* phase is obtd. by lowering the temp. each slightly to the lower temp. The directions of the multiples possessed by the liquid crystal molecules are unified to one reverse direction and 'erasing' is executed when a voltage is impressed between the electrodes 4 and 6. On the other hand, 'writing' is executed by impressing the voltage of the voltage value below the critical voltage of the ferroelectric liquid crystal 5 in the one direction reverse from the initial one direction and irradiating light or heat beam to a prescribed address.
