PURPOSE:To optionally change the display pattern of a variable pattern display device, by changing attachable/detachable small-capacity memory modules from the outside when a display pattern is fixedly stored in a memory in advance. CONSTITUTION:Upon receiving an incoming call through a telephone set, a microprocessor 2 refers to the pattern tables of connected modules among exter nal memory modules 1-n and causes signals from a sound source to make a loudspeaker 3 produce sounds by controlling a switch driver 4 in accordance with the patterns of the tables. Since several kinds of patterns are usually indicated on the exchange side in the case of a private telephone set connected with a PBX, etc., depending upon the kind of a call, a display controlling signal contains a pattern number in addition to ON/OFF. In this case, patterns are written in the tables in accordance with pattern numbers in the modules also and the microprocessor 2 can produce several kinds of patterns from the pattern information. Therefore, when memory modules connected with the same display device are exchanged, appropriate patterns can be displayed. Accordingly, selec tion of an optional pattern becomes easy and the serviceability is also improved.
