[Also in Division C4] Compounds of formulµ wherein R1 is phenylene, R2 is alkyl, cycloalkyl or phenyl, R3 is alkylene, R4 is alkyl, cycloalkyl or phenyl, R5 is substituted alkyl or cycloalkyl or phenyl which may be substituted, R6, R7 and R8 are H or alkyl, R9 and R10 are H, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy or alkanoylamido and R1, R2, R3 and R4 may be further substituted, the compounds being free of acid water-solubilizing groups; and their preparation are described. They are used as coupling components in the preparation of azo dyes (see Divisions C4-C5). In examples: (A) N-ethyl-N-(2-methanesulphonamido) ethyl-m-toluidine is condensed with acrylonitrile to yield N-ethyl-N-[2-(N1-methanesulphonyl - N1 - betacyanoethyl) amino] - ethylm-toluidine; (B) the product of (A) is hydrolysed with H 2 SO 4 to give N-ethyl-N-[2-(N1- methanesulphonyl - N - beta - carbamoyl - ethyl) amino] - ethyl - m - toluidine; (C) N - beta - chloroethyl - N - ethyl - m - toluidine, N - 2 - hydroxyethylmethanesulphonamide, K 2 CO 3 and dimethylformamide are refluxed together to give N-ethyl-N-[2-(N1-methanesulphonyl - N1 - beta - hydroxyethyl) amino]- ethyl-m-toluidine; (D) 1-(2-chloroethyl)-1,2,3,4- tetrahydro - 2,2,4,7 - tetramethyl - quinoline is reacted as in (C) to yield 1-[2-(N1-methanesulphonyl - N - betahydroxyethyl) - amino] - ethyl - 1,2,3,4 - tetrahydro - 2,2,4,7 - tetramethyl - quinoline.
