A modified block copolymer has the general configuration A-C-(-C-A) m where m is an integer from 0 to 5, A is a polymer block of a monovinyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbon and C is an adduct of a conjugated diene polymer block with from 4 to 30% by weight of an alpha-beta ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid of 3 to 8 carbon atoms, or an anhydride thereof. Preferred block polymers have the configuration polystyrene - polybutadiene, or polystyrene - polyisoprene and are modified by preforming them and then heating with preferably maleic anhydride, in a solution such as a 3 : 1 mixture of methyl ethyl ketone and perchloroethylene at 50‹ to 125‹ C. for 0À2 to 8 hours optionally with a catalyst such as azodiisobutyronitrile. Blocks A preferably have an average molecular weight of from 5000 to 80,000 and blocks C, 10,000 to 160,000. .Compositions are also disclosed, comprising (a) the above modified block copolymer (preferably 1 to 200 parts by weight, and (b) a non-polar block copolymer of general configuration A-B-(-B-A) n where n is an integer from 1 to 5, A is a polymer block of a monovinyl substituted aromatic hydrocarbon and B is a polymer block of a conjugated diene (preferably 100 parts by weight).
