Tital compds. I [Het=substituted monocyclic aromatic heterocyclic group attached to 5,6,7, or 8 position of compd. I;R=H, C1-4 alkyl, alkoxy, OH, CF3, halo, cyano, hydroxymethyl are prepd. Thus, 2.7g trans-1-[4-(N-(3-ethoxypropeneamido)-3methylphenyl -imidazole is treated with 20ml 98%-H2SO4 at 0≦̸C. After 24h at 20≦̸C, the mixt. is adjusted to PH=8.0 with satd. Na2CO3, extd. with methanol and CHCl3 mixt., dried, and chromatog. to give 1.71g 6-(1-imidazolyl)-8-methyl- 2-[1H -quinolone.
