PURPOSE:To improve workability, by providing a non-holding portion where one of belts is omitted over a prescribed length with conveyer belts for transporting paper sheets held between them at two positions in a transport passage for removing paper sheets with a bent end. CONSTITUTION:Paper sheets such as mails 16 are transferred from a direction A by a 1st transfer belt 10 and a 3rd transfer belt 12. Further, they are transferred by a 2nd transfer belt 11 and the 3rd transfer belt 12 in a direction of an arrow Q. rollers 14, 15 at the returning point of the belts 10 and 11 has a space G for forming a 1st non-holding portion. Mails having an end bent toward the left hand side with respect to an advancing direction are dropped into a collection unit 13 through the space G. The mails 16 which have not been dropped turn reversely and reach a second non-holding portion G' of the same construction from a direction shown by an arrow R and mails having an end bent toward the right hand side with respect to an advancing direction are dropped into a collection unit 13'. The remaining mails are transferred to a reading unit. With such an arrangement, mails with a bent end are automatically removed in advance thereby for improving workability.
