COMPOUND CASTING ROLL FOR CONTINUOUS CASTING

PURPOSE:To securely fix the outside layer consisting of a stainless steel of a compound casting roll and the inside layer consisting of ductile cast iron thereof with an intermediate layer and to surely transmit the rolling torque from the inside layer to the outside layer by providing the intermediate layer consisting of a graphite steel between the above-mentioned outside layer and the inside layer and uniting the outside layer, intermediate layer and inside layer by welding. CONSTITUTION:The melt of a stainless steel material is poured into a metallic mold for centrifugal casting under rotation and the melt of the graphite steel is poured to the inside surface of the outside layer 1 to centrifugally cast the intermediate layer 3 before the inside surface of the outside layer 1 does not solidify yet or right after said surface solidifies. The graphite steel is used for the intermediate layer 3 in this case as said layer has the excellent weldability with the outside layer 1 and has the less tendency to embrittleness even if the chromium of a high-alloy component intrudes into said layer from the outside layer 1. The metallic mold is then vertically erected as a stationary casting mold upon completion of casting of the intermediate layer 3. The inside layer 2 constituting the shaft part of the roll is cast by stationary pouring into said mold. The ductile cast iron is used for the material of the layer 2 in this case as said iron has excellent weldability with the intermediate layer 3 and has the less tendency to generation of shrinkage cavities therein.
