PURPOSE:To obtain a polyphenylene oxide which does not emit any offensive odor when melt-processed, by using an alkylpiperidine as a amine in producing the polyphenylene oxide by oxidatively polymerizing a phenolic monomer in the presence of a metal salt and the amine. CONSTITUTION:The purpose polyphenylene oxide is obtained by oxidatively polymerizing a phenolic monomer (e.g., 2,6-dimethylphenol) in the presence of a metal salt (e.g., manganese chloride) and an alkylpiperidine of the formula (wherein R is a 1-6C alkyl and is bonded to any of the carbon atoms of a piperidine ring and n is 1-2), e.g., 2-ethylpiperidine or 2-pipecoline. The obtained polyphenylene oxide can give a molding excellent in notched Izod impact strength, etc., and does not emit any unpleasant offensive odor in melt processing, so that environmental pollution in molding can be markedly alleviated.
