PURPOSE:To make quick retrieval and update possible in a small-capacity file storage device by compressing and encoding a key item consisting of a part of data. CONSTITUTION:In case of file generation, data (compressed data) where a key item A (key 1) 311 and a key item B (key 2) 312 consisting of a part of actual data 31 are added in every byte is stored on the same file storage device in the same order as an actual data file to generate index information (compressed code table) 32. In case of file update, only a record corresponding to an updated record number l is generated again similarly to file generation. In case of file retrieval, retrieval data 11 is encoded in the same procedures as generation of the compressed code table, and data which coincides with encoded retrieval data 11' is retrieved from the compressed code table 32.
