PURPOSE:To prevent explosion, by taking a part of a cooling inert gas out of a main circulation system, supplying the gas into a coke-charging hopper to mix the gas with a combustible gas in the hopper, combining the gas with a main circulation gas and burning the combustible gas. CONSTITUTION:A part of main circulation cooling gas in red-hot coke dry quenching apparatus is taken out of, e.g., the last part of a blower 7 and supplied to a coke-charging hopper 2 via a bypath pipe 30 with a blower 35 to dilute a combustible gas G which has been produced in the hopper 2. The diluted gas is taken out of the charging hopper 2 and returned to the main circulaltion cooling gas 5 which flows toward a cooling chamber 6 via a bypath pipe 40 to combine the gas with the main circulation cooling gas. Air 36 is supplied into the combined gas with a blower 42 to give a mixed gas. Then the mixed gas is passed through a high-temp. coke layer 41 in the cooling chamber 6, combustible gas components are reacted with oxygen to allow it to burn, thereby forming an incombustible gas.
