The ends of a band to act as a guide track for orbital welding heads for the welding (or flame cutting) of large pipes are put under tension before they are fixed together by an oblique welded seam. A prestressing belt is first joined to the guide track to bridge over the joint. The two band ends are held in this prestressed condition until the oblique joint has been welded.
