1,229,136. Recharging air cells. ALLISCHALMERS MFG. CO. 6 Oct., 1969 [9 Oct., 1968], No. 49005/69. Heading H1B. The life of an accumulator, having an anode comprising consumable active material on a conductive substrate, is prolonged if the accumulator is normally only 70-90% discharged before recharging but periodically is completely discharged thereby completely removing all active material from the anode. The complete discharge may be made after every 5 normal discharge-charge cycles. In Fig. 3 zinc-air cell 10 is being discharged through load 11. Air is supplied by pump 15 and the caustic electrolyte is circulated by pump 16 through zinc oxide filter 17. For recharging a potential is applied across terminals 20 and 21 whilst circulating the electrolyte. Zinc oxide is dissolved from the filter and zinc deposited on the anode. For complete discharge switch 25 is closed. |
