PURPOSE:To reduce the detecting time and to detect the pressure in a cylinder with good following property even at the time of high rotation of an engine by catching output of a pressure sensor in the cylinder between two comparison values and bringing one side of these comparison values close to an output peak value and detecting it. CONSTITUTION:The output of the pressure sensor 24 is inputted to the 1st and the 2nd comparators 26a and 26b via a low-pass filter 34. Further, two different comparison values are outputted from a control unit 28 and these output values are converted into analog by the 1st and the 2nd D/A converters 30a and 30b and inputted to input terminals of the other sides of both comparators 26a and 26b. When the comparison values inputted to both the comparators 26a and 26b are denoted by ref 1 and ref 2 respectively, the relation between output waveforms of the pressure sensor and the comparison values in both the comparators 26a and 26b is made one of (A)-(C). Next, the outputs of both the comparators 26a and 26b are inputted to an unit 28 and the position and distance relation in accordance with the compared result are identified and as a result, compared initial values are changed and can be outputted to both the comparators 26a and 26b via the converters 30a and 30b.
