PURPOSE:To detect axial torque or a torsion angle accurately by fitting a sensor which detects the circumferential relative deviation between a couple of torsion detection pipes to a casing. CONSTITUTION:The cylindrical casing 17 from which the sensor 24 is detached is fitted loosely around a couple of right and left torsion detection pipes 5 fitted around a support pipe 2 and a bearing 18, a dust seal 19, and a circlip 21 are fitted in order between the torsion detection pipes 5 and cylindrical casing 17 from both right and left sides. Then, the circlip 21 is fitted in the semicircular groove 20 of the cylindrical casing 17, the sensor 24 is fitted to the cylindrical casing 17, and a fitting sleeve 16 is engaged with the base end parts 7 of the torsion detection pipes 5 lastly. Then, the light emitting element 25 of the sensor 24 emits light, which is transmitted through a detection disk 13 to detect the torsion angle of a rotary shaft 1 from variation in the quantity of light detected by the light receiving element 26, thereby measuring the torque based on the previously found rigidity of the rotary shaft 1 and the torsion angle of the rotary shaft 1.
