This transmission unit with an automatic gearbox comprises, in a casing, a torque converter 13 arranged on the output shaft of an engine 10, a mechanical gear M1 arranged at the output of the torque converter and an automatic gearbox comprising several secondary shafts A, B, C each extending parallel to the output shaft of the engine. Each secondary shaft carries a respective input gear A1, B1, C1 capable of being rotationally driven by the driving gear by means of a chain 14 which connects each input gear and the driving gear. This arrangement makes it possible to arrange the secondary shafts around the converter and to house the gearbox under the engine 10, thus limiting the axial bulk of the motorised propulsion unit assembly.
