Apparatus for shaping one end of a plastic optical fibre and the corresponding implementation method

The apparatus and the method according to the invention are intended for shaping one end of a plastic optical fibre with a view to connecting this fibre to an emitter and/or receiver component or to another fibre. The apparatus includes an electrically heated cutting blade 3 which is positioned in a body made of insulating material, a fibre-holder element 6 can move along a slideway 7 in the body and uses means for positioning and holding the end of the fibre to be shaped. The shaping enables a polished connection surface of specified orientation to be obtained at the end of the core of the fibre by cutting with the aid of the blade under the action of a spring 16 and polishing. The implementation involves manually manoeuvring the fibre-holder element 6 which is pushed to the bottom of the slideway up against the spring 16 in order to insert the fibre, the spring pushes the fibre-holder element back in order to cut when the manual thrust is released. A second manual thrust of the fibre-holder element polishes the fibre and allows it to be withdrawn after displacement. <IMAGE>
