PURPOSE:To prevent inaccurate dimension and breakage of a tool by providing a counter, a timer, and a feed abnormality detecting device which make output at a shorter preset value and a longer preset value than the set quantity of a feed arrow movement, in a material feeding device for an automatic lathe. CONSTITUTION:A bar material 2 is held by a finger chuck 5 on the end of the feed arrow 4 of a material feed device 3, and pressed against a bar material machining device 1. After machining is completed, a collet chuck is opened, a main spindle 1b is retracted, and the bar material 2 is chucked again. In this case, a cutting-off tool 1a retains the bar material 2 and holds its position. And, the main spindle 1b is advanced by a defined length L. The number of pulses is counted by a rotary encoder and a counter. When the feed is normal, the contacts of a timer are operated after the always open contact of the counter is closed leaving an always open contact for operating an emergency stop control circuit kept open. However, in the case of a short feed abnormality or a long feed abnormality, such abnormality is detected and the emergency stop control circuit is operated, to prevent poor machining or breakage of a tool.
