According to the invention, in order to convert a frequency f0 by a small frequency shift fm, the following operations are undertaken: - translate a frequency qf0 by a shift q<n>fm (with q and n positive integers); - divide the frequency qf0 + q<n>fm thus obtained by the integer q; - translate a frequency (q-1) f0 by a shift equal to the frequency obtained following the previous division; - divide the frequency obtained following the previous conversion by the integer q; - repeat these latter two operations n-2 times, thus making it possible to obtain, at the end of the last operation, the desired frequency f0+fm.
