A catheter needle guard comprises a single elongated sleeve 26, the sleeve having a longitudinal slot 27 through the thickness of the sleeve, a collar 28 for fastening to a needle hub, and a flexible intermediate section 29 between the sleeve and the collar providing a pivot whereby the sleeve is pivotable relative to the collar. The sleeve is preferably horseshoe-shaped in cross section but may also be U-shaped. The guard may form part of an assembly with a hub 20 having a needle 23 fixed relative thereto, the collar being fixed to the hub and the sleeve being adapted to snap over the whole length of the needle. The assembly is made by heat sealing an extruded sleeve to a collar at the intermediate section 29 which is pre-cut and part of sleeve 26, and then solvent sealing the collar to hub 20. The guard is made from polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride and vinylidine copolymers, vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate copolymers, or polyvinyl acetate resins. The hub 20 and guard 25 may be made in one piece by injection moulding polypropylene or polyethylene. Collar 28 may be triangular square or polygonal in cross-section. |
