NEW MATERIAL:An N-substituted phenyl-teraconic acid imide derivative expressed by formula I (X is H, F or Cl; R1 is H or lower alkyl; R2 and R3 are H, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, alkoxy, alkoxyalkyl, alkoxycarbonylalkyl, cycloalkyl, hydroxyalkyl, cyanoalkyl, aryl, aralkyl or heterocyclic ring which may contain O in NR2R3). EXAMPLE:N-{5-[ 1-( sec-Butylcarbamoyl )ethylamino ]-4-chlorophenyl}-teraco nic acid imide. USE:A highly selective herbicide having improved selectivity of imide based herbicides for cultivated crops. PREPARATION:A compound expressed by formula V (Z is halogen) is reacted with a compound expressed by formula VII (Z is halogen) in the presence of a basic compound, e.g. NaHCO3, etc., as necessary, further in the coexistence of a solvent and/or an iodide, e.g. NaI, etc., at 50-250 deg.C to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
