PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic material showing a significant magneto-caloric effect as a working substance for magnetic refrigeration and capable of functioning as a superior heat storage material in an extremely low temp. range by providing a specified composition consisting of Dy, Gd, Al, Ga and O. CONSTITUTION:This magnetic material has a composition represented by a general formula Dy3-x+deltaGdxAlyGa5-y-deltaO12 (where 0<=x<=3+delta, 0<=y<=5-delta, 0<=delta<=0.6, and in case of delta=0, the combinations of x=0 with y=0, x=3 with y=0 or x=0 with y=5 excluded). The oxides of Dy, Gd, Al and Ga are blended in a prescribed ratio, melted and formed into a single crystal by the Gzochralski method or other method to obtain the magnetic material. When the magnetic material is polycrystalline, it may be obtd. by sintering powders of the oxides.
